About Clan Graham

Clan Colors and Motto

The colors for Clan Graham are gold (“or”) and black (“sable”). The armorial bearing for each Graham who is granted arms by the Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland has a modified arrangement of the following (in heraldry terms): “or, on a plain chief sable, three escallops, or” which means: a gold field and three gold scallops on a black chief. Grahams who have not been granted arms may display this simple shield.

The motto of the Graham Clan is “Ne Oublie.” It is French for “Do Not Forget.” Frequently we ask, “What are we not to forget?” Per our Chief, without some documented meaning, our motto might represent some far-off hero or clan clash which should be remembered or not be allowed to repeat itself. Early records show that one of our Clan’s roles under the Crown was based in the feudal system of land holding in Scotland, so it would have been very appropriate for “Ne Oublie” to mean to do your duty to God and King. Perhaps the modern equivalent might be “Do your Duty?”

How to use in Communications

Pictured here is the Clan Graham Society banner which is used in CGS communications. Note that the official badge always goes to the left and the coat of arms is placed on the right. Learn about the important protocols for use of the badge and arms, see illustration details and their historical symbolism by clicking below.

Graham Tartan

There are several tartans that have been associated with Clan Graham, including one made as a courtesy to the descendants of the Menteith Grahams eventhough their peerage line is extinct. Clan Graham Society members may choose to wear any tartan of their choosing. Most members choose either the Graham of Montrose or Graham of Menteith tartans. The official tartan for Clan Graham Society displays and decor is the Graham of Montrose Modern shown here. To learn about the other tartans, click on the button below.

Clan Plant, The Laurel

The True Laurel (laurus nobilis) has been approved by our Chief and the Lord Lyon as the Clan Graham plant. While the True Laurel is not indigenous to Scotland, it is the laurel seen on Greek and Roman noble heads–very fitting as a Graham Clan plant.

According to Wikipedia, “The symbolism carried over to Roman culture which held the laurel as a symbol of victory. It is also the source of the words baccalaureate and poet laureate, as well as the expression ‘assume the laurel.’
